Scrapbooking & Photography - Markets on the Rise...
Today people are fascinated with the opportunity to express the pride and pleasure of their life’s treasures. In 2002, an SIA benchmark survey found 21 percent of U.S. households had scrapbooked in the past 12 months. New results measured in the 2004 SIA survey saw household participation rise to nearly one in four households, or 24.5 percent, fueling annual industry sales to an impressive $2.551 billion. This spending number represents a staggering 1200% sales increase over the past six years compared to a figure of $200 million in 1996 annual scrapbook industry sales*. Clearly, scrapbooking is a rapidly growing and increasing popular pastime.
"The typical U.S. picture-taker is a mother with two children, who is fully occupied sixteen hours a day. Her albums are the family's archive-maybe their most emotionally valuable possession. She wants to personally show those pictures, or send hard copy prints - not just e-mail them - to her friends and relatives." Martin Coyne II, Eastman Kodak |
Photography is currently experiencing a sweeping revolution with the arrival of digital photography. Consumers around the world have adopted the many benefits that this new medium provides. From the instant gratification of knowing that you have the perfect shot, to the flexibility of sharing your photos in new ways, digital photography is here to stay. In fact, Gartner Research predicts digital camera unit sales will grow from 85 million in 2005 to an estimated 107 million in 2009. Many manufacturers recognize this tremendous opportunity by already incorporating digital photography technology into everything from printers to cell phones. According to IDC, the number of digital images captured per month continued to grow another 18% in 2005. Even traditional film photography continues to remain a popular and convenient means for capturing and preserving memories. Nearly 85 billion film exposures were made last year worldwide and some 550 million households around the world own at least one film camera.
Everyone, everywhere is interested in preserving their memories and sharing their experiences. For many, scrapbooking is a fantastic means to collect, preserve and present these memories. However, for many more the significant investment of time and supplies is too high a barrier to pursue this hobby. Others feel that they simply don’t have the “talent” to create beautiful craftwork. More often than not people resort to simply stashing away their memories into cumbersome albums or simply dumping their photos into a shoebox. Even those consumers embracing the digital photography phenomenon are grappling with ways to preserve and share their memories.
